dear god... this was a masterpiece. despite having seen tokyo godfathers and being familiar with the fact that satoshi kon is an incredible artist, director, and writer, i wasn't expecting much out of this film. i think it might've been my prejudice towards male writers and their usual, distasteful depictions of violence against women acting up... but i owe satoshi kon an apology. i was capitvated by perfect blue in every aspect–especially blown away by its narrative, soundtrack, and animation and visuals (and i amazed by junko iwao who played mima as well). it is such a moving display of a young woman who is pushed to her limits and an effective critique on the exploitation of women in the entertainment industry. it was shocking, haunting, terrifyingly violent, and very intentional. even after a few days, i was replaying scenes in my head–processing their careful placements in the film. UGH, so genius. i will also note that it's an extremely triggering watch if you struggle with sexual violence; it was truly sickening and i had an anxiety attack after leaving the theaters... was so worth it though lol! for the culture...!

i genuinely took ill after seeing this in the theatres... it will likely be years until i feel comfortable enough for a rewatch. it's such an incredible film though—beautifully intense. i really love how it depicts what it's like to go from being passionate to being viciously obsessed at one's own detriment. i love how well the cycle of an abusive relationship is presented here... so tasteful and truly one of the best thrillers i've ever seen
